A significant freeze is forecasted to impact the Houston area next week, bringing unusually cold temperatures to a region unaccustomed to such conditions. Residents should prepare to stay warm and protect their homes from potential damage.
Staying Warm:
Home Heating: Maintain indoor temperatures between 18°C and 20°C (64°F to 68°F) to ensure comfort and prevent pipes from freezing. This range balances warmth and energy efficiency.
Layered Clothing: Dress in layers to retain body heat. Thermal wear, sweaters, and socks can significantly enhance warmth indoors.
Foot Warmers: Consider using air-activated toe warmers for additional comfort. These affordable items can keep your feet warm for up to eight hours.
Protecting Your Home:
Pipe Insulation: Wrap exposed pipes, especially those outdoors or in unheated areas like garages and attics, with pipe insulation or foam sleeves to prevent freezing.
Outdoor Faucets: Disconnect garden hoses and cover outdoor faucets with insulated covers to protect them from freezing temperatures.
Indoor Faucets: Allow faucets to drip slowly during the freeze. This keeps water moving through the pipes, reducing the risk of freezing.
Cabinet Doors: Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around pipes, especially those located on exterior walls.
Thermostat Settings: If you plan to be away from home, set your thermostat to at least 7°C (45°F) to prevent indoor pipes from freezing.
Know Your Shutoff Valve: Familiarize yourself with the location of your home's main water shutoff valve. In case a pipe bursts, shutting off the water quickly can minimize damage.
Additional Tips:
Seal Cracks and Openings: Inspect your home for any cracks or openings, especially around windows, doors, and where pipes enter the house. Seal them with caulk or insulation to prevent cold air from entering.
Protect Plants and Pets: Bring potted plants indoors and cover outdoor vegetation to shield them from frost. Ensure pets have a warm place to stay during the cold snap. Bring your pets indoors!
By taking these precautions, Houston residents can stay warm and safeguard their homes against the upcoming freeze.
